There are multiple overlaps between HIV prevention and COVID-19 research. COVID-19 is impacting HIV prevention research studies and service delivery worldwide. In response, HIVR4P will add a new abstract category, “COVID research: Applying lessons from HIV prevention to SARS CoV-2,” to the January conference.

As the research community responds to the global challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, HIV prevention science matters as much as ever. Our priority as organizers of the HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P) conference remains the safety and wellbeing of all participants. After careful consideration, we have decided to postpone the HIVR4P conference to 17-21 January 2021.
We are acutely aware many researchers and research organizations with critical studies and submissions to HIVR4P are now also heavily engaged in the COVID-19 response. Our hope is that postponing the conference, rather than presenting it virtually in October, will allow for the broadest participation to foster knowledge-exchange, debate and direction-setting in the field of HIV prevention research that HIVR4P is known for.
At this time, we are considering holding either an in-person conference in Cape Town, a virtual conference or a combination event featuring both in-person and virtual elements. We will hold the conference on 17-21 January 2021, and this date will remain unchanged. The final format for HIVR4P will be announced in September 2023, and will be guided by the latest available recommendations from leading global and local health authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of conference participants.
In light of the postponement, deadlines for abstract submission, scholarship, Journalist Fellowship and satellite session applications have been extended until 23 July 2023. Abstracts already submitted can be withdrawn and resubmitted with updated data before 23 July 2023 if required.
In the coming months, we will work tirelessly to ensure the HIV research community is able to come together at HIVR4P – whether physically or virtually – and share the latest advances in the fast-growing field of HIV prevention research.

HIVR4P fosters interdisciplinary knowledge-exchange on HIV vaccines, microbicides, PrEP, treatment as prevention and biomedical interventions as well as their related social and behavioural implications.
The great strength of HIVR4P is the participation of researchers, policy makers, implementers and advocates working across the spectrum of biomedical interventions and scientific disciplines informing state-of-the-art HIV prevention from pre-clinical research through to implementation.
